Concord Elementary Physical Education: Food Power

Concord Elementary Physical Education: Food Power - This event was brought to us by the University of Missouri Extension Office courtesy of a Lindbergh Schools Foundation Grant. Students learned how food is grown on the farm, how it gets to their table, and then how our bodies use this food. This was a fun, interactive event that was enjoyed by all our Concord students.

Concord Physical Education News

It has been a busy year in Physical Education so far.  We have learned many new games, worked on skills such as overhand throwing, hula hoop, jump rope, basket and basketball related skills, and worked to improve our fitness level. Your children have also participated in various rhythmic activities, holiday related games, and of course we all enjoyed the inflatables. Check out the pictures we have posted of some of these activities.

Also, look for information coming home regarding our special presentation called Food Power.  This will be an interactive exhibit sponsored by the Missouri Extension office. Students will start at the farm learning how food is grown and then learn how it gets to our table. They will also find out what happens to the food once it is eaten.  There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for this special event.

November Update

Students in all grades have been participating in volleyball skills during the month of November.  In grades K-2 we have practiced the forearm pass, overhead pass, and the serve using balloons.  We also used the balloons to explore other ways to keep them in the air using various parts of our bodies.  These activities were done individually and also with a partner.

In grades 3-5 we practiced our volleyball skills using our oversized volleyballs.  If you have not seen these they are lighter and bigger than a normal sized volleyball eliminating the fear of the ball.  We also used our airlights to play our games.  These are geometric shapes made of parachute fabric that are then inflated.  These airlights are one of our students' favorite activities.  They are extremely large and float slowly.  Be sure to ask you kids about them.

Along, with our volleyball work, we have also played many holiday games.  A little preview for December will be more holiday/winter games, fitness testing, and beginning to work on basketball skills.  We hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

We're Off To A Good Start In Physical Education

Welcome to all our families for the 2011-12 Concord school year.  We are loving having every other day physical education.  Since the beginning of the year, your children have participated in many different games which reinforce the skills we are working on in class and allow the students to develop strategies for success.  They have learned and practiced football skills and throwing skills.  We have worked on some aspects of physical fitness testing with the third-fifth graders.  All students loved having the inflatables and what a great workout they got.  We also did the Halloween Challenge Course and all participated in the First Annual Concord Pumpkin.  We are currently working on volleyball skills with all students.  The 3rd-5th graders practice their skills using our oversized volleyball trainers.  Our younger students are playing with balloons to introduce and reinforce these same skills.
Please remember to wear tennis shoes to class.  When a student forgets their shoes the first time, we will look at their shoes and determine if we think they are safe for play or not. If they are safe, then we will let them play otherwise they will sit out.  If they forget their shoes a second time then they will automatically sit out.

Be sure to check out our Concord PE facebook page.
